Dr Stuart Gietel-Basten received his PhD from the University of Cambridge in 2008 and has also held appointments at the International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis (Austria); Brown University; the European University Institute; and the Jagiellonian University, Krakow. 

He is a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and the Royal Society of Arts. He is also an Associate Member of Nuffield College; a non-stipendiary lecturer in demography at St John’s College; a Research Fellow at the Risk Society and Policy Research Centre, National University of Taiwan; Associate Research Fellow at the European Research Centre on Contemporary Taiwan, Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen, and honorary professor of social policy at the Beijing Administratve College.

His main research interests lie at the intersection of demographic change and social policy in Asia. Current research grants include a study of fertility preferences in low fertility Pacific Asia; designing a holistic population policy for Hong Kong; remeasuring ageing in Asia and designing a new Health and Demographic Surveillance System for Iraqi Kurdistan.
