After qualifying in medicine at the Westminster Hospital in 1975 he trained in general internal medicine in various hospitals around London before specialist training in rheumatology and rehabilitation in Oxford.

His interest in the genetic basis of musculoskeletal diseases started with a Research Fellowship in the Nuffield Department of Pathology studying osteogenesis imperfecta, followed by research as a Senior Fellow into the immuno-genetics of rheumatoid arthritis.

He has been Clinical Reader in Rheumatology since 1992 and headed a research group studying genome wide associations of inflammatory arthropathies, including rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis.

During the 1990s he held the posts of Academic and Senior Tutor at Green College. He was awarded the Michael Mason Prize at the British Society of Rheumatology in 1992 for his work on the new genetics and rheumatology.
