Degree days

Graduation ceremonies

University graduation ceremonies take place in the Sheldonian Theatre on certain days (usually Saturdays) throughout the year. The College has a quota of places available at certain ceremonies. Places must be booked in advance – final-year students will be contacted in November, and former students who still wish to graduate can book through the link below.

See a list of forthcoming GTC degree days and book a ceremony.

See the University's degree ceremonies information page.

See the degree ceremony brochure.

Academic dress

All graduands must wear full academic dress with subfusc clothing for the ceremony. If you are not sure what this is, please consult the A to Z or ask Tracy Craven at the time of booking.

College celebrations

The College provides a light lunch for graduands and their guests before the official graduation ceremony.

Guests

A limited number of guest tickets for family and friends is also available. Please note that the ceremony is not suitable for children under the age of 7.

Special requirements

Graduands requiring special seating arrangements (ie. due to a disability) should notify the College so that both the University and College event organisers can plan where to accommodate them most comfortably and conveniently.

If you are not able to attend a ceremony

You may take your degree in absentia (in absence) at any ceremony. The quota system does not apply for those taking degrees in absentia. If you take your degree in absentia you will not be able to attend a ceremony at a later date.

If you book a place to attend a ceremony but find you are unable to attend at short notice, you will graduate in absentia at that ceremony.

Degree certificates

You will receive your degree certificate on the day of graduation (or sent by recorded delivery if graduating in absentia).

You will not be able to obtain your degree certificate until you have had your degree conferred at a graduation ceremony. However you can request a Degree Confirmation letter free of charge by contacting the University Degree Conferrals office.
