University graduation ceremonies take place in the Sheldonian Theatre on certain days throughout the year. The College has a quota of places available at particular ceremonies. Places must be booked in advance, as follows:
- Taught course students (including medics) will be contacted by the University's Degree Conferrals Office in November of their final year, inviting them to book a place at a ceremony. Such students will have priority booking until January.
- Research students will be contacted by the Degree Conferrals Office after they are granted Leave to Supplicate.
- Former students who have not yet graduated, or those who incorporated a BA degree from Cambridge or Trinity College Dublin and wish to have the Oxford MA conferred, should book through the college using the link below.
All graduands must wear full academic dress with subfusc clothing for the ceremony. If you are not sure what this is, please consult the A to Z or see the University's degree ceremonies information page. Graduands are required to organize their own gown hire, and are advised to do so well in advance of the ceremony date.
Three guest tickets for family and friends are available for the ceremony. Please note that the ceremony is not suitable for children under the age of 7.
Graduands requiring special seating arrangements for themselves or guests (ie. due to a disability) should ensure that they indicate this when booking so that both the University and College event organisers can plan where to accommodate them most comfortably and conveniently.
A celebratory breakfast (morning ceremonies) or light lunch (afternoon ceremonies) is provided at the College for graduands and up to three guests before the official graduation ceremony.
If you are not able to attend a ceremony
You may take your degree in absentia (in absence) at any ceremony. The quota system does not apply for those taking degrees in absentia. If you take your degree in absentia you will not be able to attend a ceremony at a later date.
If you book a place to attend a ceremony but find you are unable to attend at short notice, you will graduate in absentia at that ceremony.
You will receive your degree certificate automatically following graduation whether you graduate in person or in absence.
You will not be able to obtain your degree certificate until you have had your degree conferred at a graduation ceremony. However you can request a Degree Confirmation letter free of charge by contacting the University Degree Conferrals office.
