The IT Department has recently installed a managed print solution called Papercut.
The aim of this new service is to provide students with access to Multi Function Copiers (MFCs) to enable them to print both from computer room PCs and remotely over the web. The copiers offer A4, A3 and colour printing.
There are two MFCs available for use. ASC1 can be found in the new computing suite within the Walton building. MFC1 is located in the ground floor of the admin building.
Access to this unit is controlled by university card. By swiping your card, you can scan to email, copy, and release print jobs. There are posters on the wall by the copier to assist you with this.
The system automatically logs the cost of all printing and copying against your account. You will be provided with £10 credit on the account annually. Billing is monthly to battels, so you'll only see charges when you have exceeded your credit. The system charges are :
|Print / Copy Description||Cost in pence per page|
|Black and White A4 singled sided||3p|
|Black and White A4 double sided||4p|
|Colour A4 single sided||6p|
|Colour A4 double sided||10p|
|Black and White A3 single sided||8p|
|Colour A3 single sided||14p|
|Scanning to email||Free|
Charges will only be made at the time of printing. So jobs submitted that are never printed will not be charged. Papercut is running a feature called page level detection. This means that if you send a print job composed of colour pages and black and white pages to the printer as a colour print job, papercut will work out which pages to charge as colour, and which to charge as black and white, saving you money.
This is also limited printing provision operating within the Hayloft above the bar, where there are two A4 black and white double sided printers. Printing to these is not charged, but you must supply your own paper.
Guides for using the MFC
Printing to the MFC
There are two ways to print to the MFC.
1) Locally from the Hayloft
2) Remotely over the internet
1) Printing from the Hayloft
From the computers in the hayloft, you'll find that you now have a printer available called MFC1. Printing defaults on this are set to A4 black and white duplex (double sided).
To change the settings, with your document open, select File - Print. Select the printer MFC1. Click the Printer Properties link.
The Detailed Settings tab provides you with options for paper size, and colour or black and white.
The Edit button give access to single or double sided options. Once printed, your job will be held on the system for 3 days. If not printed in this time, it will be automatically deleted.
To release the print job, you swipe your card at the MFC, select the option to Select and Release Print Jobs, and pick your print jobs to print, as detailed in the guide above.
You can check your account balance using the Papercut popup.
