Printing in the Computer Room

Introduction

There are two black and white laser printers available for use in College. These will print A4 paper (which can be purchased from the lodge), but please do not use transparancies in them! If you want to print larger than A4, print transparancies or in colour then you should use the OUCS printing service at the Computing Services, 13 Banbury Rd.

Both printers will print either single sided, or double sided (duplex). The HP 3005 (on the right) is set to default to print single sided, and the 2420 (on the left) is set to default to print double sided, effectively halving the amount of paper needed.

How to print

To print double sided, simply press Ctrl+P (which will print to the 2420) or select the File menu then Print from the application you are using.

Clicking the down arrow by Name allows you to select between the HP 3005 (single sided) and the 2420 (double sided) printer. If there are no printers in that box, then see the troubleshooting section. Once you have selected your printer and what you want to print (pages, copies etc) press ok to print.

Then go and add paper to the printer - always add at least 10 sheets even if you only want to print 1 page, as the printers will often jam if you try and feed them less. If it doesn't print, read the troubleshooting section

NB: by changing 'Pages per sheet' to read more than 1 you can print 2 or more pages per A4 sheet, this may save you paper.

Printing Double Sided

To print double sided, follow the instructions above, and select the HP 2420 in the Name box. Normally this will default to double sided printing. If not, then do the following;

To control how it prints double sided, click on properties after you've selected it in the Name box above.

From the 'General' tab, click the 'printing preferences' button. Click the 'Finishing' tab. The following screen will display:

2420 printer properties

Set duplex printing

Changing the option of Duplex will control how the double sided prints. Make sure there is a tick in the 'Print on Both Sides' box for duplex printing, or no tick for single sided printing. You will probably never need the 'Flip pages up' option, which will print double sided landscape pages.

NB. Both printers in the computer room can print both single and double sided. To print double sided from the HP 3005, follow the instuctions above for the HP 2420.

Printing single sided

To print single sided, simply select the File menu then Print from the application you are using. Click the down arrow by Name allows you to select the HP 3005 (single sided) printer. By deafult this will print single sided.
