Remote File Access
Remote file access is now available over the web. You can now access files and folders stored on the College server from over the web. This will make backing up key files much easier. Make sure you have logged into your account in the Green Templeton College computer room at least once before attempting remote access. Please only back up work related files on the College server.
Make sure you do not delete or change the folders 'My Documents' and 'Desktop', these are important system folders.
To access your filestore remotely, open Internet Explorer. Select File - Open... Tick the 'Open as a Web Folder' box, and in the 'Open:' box type in https://jade.green.ox.ac.uk/username, where the word 'username' must be replaced with your Green Templeton computer room login name. Note that this is an https connection. Missing the https out will result in a 'Page not found' error.
You will be presented with a security alert about security certificates. Click Yes to proceed. You will then get a login box. Put in your Green Templeton computer room username and password. Windows 2000 users may also be asked for the domain - put Green in the box if prompted.
You should now get a list of the files in the root of your home directory (as is normally mapped to S:\ drive on the machines in the computer room). Problems with the login at this stage are most likely to do with username and password errors. Please contact the IT Department for assistance with this.
To stop persistent prompts for login information, windows will need to save your username and passwords. This will provide a small security risk, so isn't recommended.
Note: This facility hasn't been tested on any browsers other than Internet Explorer. It uses Microsoft's standard implementation of WebDav, which may not be compatible with other browsers.
For Mac OSX users you can gain access to your filestore by:
1)Click anywhere on your desktop to bring up the Desktop context menubar at the top of the screen.
2)From the Go menu, select Connect to Server.... The Connect to Server window appears.
3)In the URL box, type https://jade.green.ox.ac.uk/username - where 'username' is your GTC computer room username - and click the Connect button
4)You will be prompted with a 'verify Certificate' dialogue box, telling you the certificate is invalid. Ignore this message, and click continue.
5)At the login prompt put in the domain (which is green), your GTC computer room username and password.
Finder will then open, and present you with a network drive. This drive will also be mounted on the desktop.
Linux users using kde3.1 upwards can type:
webdavs://@jade.green.ox.ac.uk:443/
into their konqueror toolbar to gain access to their file stores.
