Ron Emerson, GTC alumnus (MLitt Management Studies 1997) Associate Fellow, has been appointed as the first Chairman of the government-owned British Business Bank by the Business Secretary Vince Cable.

The Bank is designed to support economic growth by bringing together public and private sector funds to create more effective and efficient finance markets for small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs)in the UK. An extra £1 billion of funding, which the Chancellor announced at Autumn Statement last year, will be made available to SMEs.

Emerson will play a crucial role in leading the institution, including the process to appoint a CEO for the institution later this year.

He has spent most of his career in international banking, most recently with Standard Chartered Bank where he was the Group Head of Wholesale Banking, based in Singapore. He has also been a Senior Advisor at the Bank of England and the Financial Services Authority.

Mr Emerson said "This is an idea of its time. The UK has long needed a more effective set of financing options for smaller businesses, and the British Business Bank will be a key catalyst in this process."
