GTC Astronomy Lecture: 'Victorian Phoenix' - a journey of astronomical discovery

Wednesday 14 February 2018, 18:00 - 19:30

Speaker: Charles Barclay, Director Blackett Observatory, GTC Associate Fellow

From its arrival at the Radcliffe Observatory to its eventual restoration at Marlborough College a century later, the Barclay Equatorial has played a pivotal role for 50 years in Oxford research and then 80 years in Wiltshire in education and outreach. The discoveries it has made are perhaps surpassed by the extraordinary coincidence in the discovery of its original provenance. A Victorian telescope, purchased by a Grand Amateur, the 4th largest of its type in England when built, is now the oldest in the World to be computerised and both supports the UK Astronomy Olympiad team and is the most significant in full time primary and secondary school use in the country.

Location : E P Abraham Lecture Theatre
