Agnieszka Kubal Profile Pic SmilingDr Agnieszka Kubal is a Research Fellow, Green Templeton College and Associate Professor in Socio-Legal Studies (CSLS), Law Faculty, University of Oxford.

Agnieszka completed her DPhil at the University of Oxford in 2011. Following post-doctoral spells at International Migration Institute (Oxford), CSLS (Oxford) and Davis Centre for Russian and Eurasian Studies (Harvard), she was based at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES) at UCL, where she held an Associate Professorship in Sociology.

Agnieszka studies the relationship between law and society with a focus on Central and Eastern Europe and Russia. Currently, she leads a major research project (2022 to 2027) funded by the UKRI, investigating human rights mobilisation in Central Eastern Europe and Russia from historical and comparative perspective. This project aims to develop new theories about human rights efforts in several countries, including those dealing with political abuse, conflict, transformation, and democratic decline.

Agnieszka’s research has had a significant impact beyond academia. Her work with undocumented Syrian asylum seekers in Russia contributed to a European Court of Human Rights judgment (LM and Others v Russia) that protected Syrians from deportation across Europe.
