His work leading large, randomised trials of treatments for common diseases uses innovative approaches to improve trial quality and efficiency. He has conducted a series of definitive trials in cardiovascular and kidney disease that have changed regulatory licenses and clinical practice. He was a lead contributor to the G7 Clinical Trials Charter and the 100 Days Mission for Pandemic Preparedness. Under his leadership, the Good Clinical Trials Collaborative (supported by Wellcome and Gates) coordinated the production of new principles-based guidelines for clinical trials which were adopted by the World Health Organization and included in the WHO Best Practices for Clinical Trials in 2024.
In June 2021, he was knighted for services to public health and science.
