This talk focuses on the human rights situation of older care home residents. It will argue that in order to improve their human rights in practice, greater understanding of the practical issues facing them in relation to their rights is required, as well as a will to tackle these issues sustainably. To gain such insights, the voices of care home residents, their families, and staff, must be at the centre, with rigorous human rights research methodologies that take into account the complex care home environment. The talk will also introduce a typology of approaches that address this complexity and provide a foundation to define and tackle the challenge of navigating between rhetoric and practical implementation.
