Planetary Health beyond growth

Green Templeton Lectures 2024

Thursday 15 February 2024   17:00 to 18:45

Speakers:

Catherine Howarth, ShareAction Chief Executive
Kate Raworth, Senior Associate, Environmental Change Institute, University of Oxford
Moderator: Dr SanYuMay Tun

Catherine Howarth will posit that the global capital markets system, which invests savings and pension assets for billions of people, is not doing what it could to support either planetary health or human health. She will present examples and offer perspectives on why the finance system is failing in respect of planetary and public health. Catherine will then propose reforms and remedies to bring the finance system back into harmony with people and planet.

Kate Raworth will introduce the core concepts of Doughnut Economics, consider the respective roles of growth and balance in contemporary economic worldviews, and will explore the implications for planetary health. She will focus on discussing the many ways in which today’s economies are structurally dependent upon endless economic growth, and with respect to the role of business and finance, she will ask what kind of changes are required in the deep design of enterprise and of finance, if they are both to be in service to achieving, rather than undermining, planetary health.
