Green Templeton College | Oxford

Green Templeton College is saddened to learn of the death of Dr John Horder, an Honorary Fellow of the College, at the age of 92.

Dr Horder was a highly influential general practitioner with a special interest in mental health, an interest which grew after suffering a long period of depression.

He read Medicine at Oxford and entered general practice in 1951in London, intending it to be a stopgap but finding it a revelation, offering what he described as "a mission and drive" that lasted throughout his career.

During a long and distinguished career, he also played a large part in the development of vocational training for general practice, contributing to both its theory and implementation. He chaired the group which produced The Future General Practitioner - Learning and Teaching, a classic textbook which went through many editions. For six years he was consultant adviser to the Department of Health and Social Security.
