Jackson J. Zhao has established his interest in energy, urban, and infrastructure-related environmental and developmental issues and is obsessed with their philosophical, political and economic ramifications. He received his BSc in Alternative Energy Science and Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He has also experienced semester-long training at the School of Public Policy and Management, Tsinghua University (China), and School of Political Science and Economics, Waseda University (Japan).

Starting his academic career as an engineer, he has co-authored more than six publications in solar energy and low-carbon city planning, including three in Applied Energy and Energy, two peer-reviewed international journals. Outside academia, he has worked as a research assistant on environmental issues with the Shanghai city government and CDP, a London-based not-for-profit international organisation. Besides that, he has served multiple entities, including MSCI, ENGIE, the Shenzhen Institute of Building Research, and the Walt Disney Company, on a variety of topics, e.g., sustainable finance and energy system optimisation.

He has extensive volunteering experience in Greenpeace and local NGOs and is passionate about taking initiatives. In his senior year, he co-founded a local student-led environmental organisation which achieved good publicity. In his free time, he loves running, outdoor endurance training, reading and listening to people’s stories.
