Fast Forward… Or Not? Reframing the Automation and Future of Work Discourse

Thursday 18 October 2018, 18:30 - 19:30

Speaker: Professor Leslie Willcocks

Drawing on three years research and publication in deployment of robotic process and cognitive automation technologies, Willcocks will first critique the often conflicting accumulating evidence and predictions about the impact of automation. He will then provide an overview of service automation technologies as deployed at organizational levels, and their emerging impacts at work. This will lead into a major reframing of the debate about automation and work futures, pointing to eight major qualifiers to the more extreme predictions of job loss.

Willcocks is Professor in Technology Work and Globalization at the Department of Management at London School of Economics and Political Science. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Information Technology, and associate fellow of Green Templeton College. Previously he taught at the University of Oxford for nine years. His doctorate is from the University of Cambridge.

Willcocks has a global reputation for his work in robotic process automation, AI, cognitive automation and the future of work, digital innovation, outsourcing, global management strategy, organizational change, IT management, and managing digital business. He is co-author of 60 books on these subjects, and has published over 230 refereed papers in journals such as Harvard Business Review, Sloan Management Review, California Management Review, MIS Quarterly, Journal of Management Studies. He is a regular keynote speaker at international practitioner and academic conferences, and has been retained as adviser and expert witness by major corporations and government institutions in the UK, USA and Australia.
