Dario Carugo Profile Pic

Dr Dario Carugo is a Research Fellow at Green Templeton College and an Associate Professor of Biostimulation and Immunological Engineering in the Botnar Research Centre at NDORMS (Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences), University of Oxford.

Dario holds BSc and MSc degrees in Biomedical Engineering from Politecnico di Milano (Italy) and a PhD in Bioengineering Sciences from the University of Southampton. Before joining NDORMS, he worked at the University of Southampton and the School of Pharmacy at University College London (UCL).

His research focuses on the design of mechanistic experimental models, quantitative methods, and prototype devices for the development of novel therapeutic modalities. These mainly include interventional and stimuli-mediated treatments that can disrupt or modulate biological systems to induce anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, or reparative/restorative effects. For example, he has been researching the combined use of ultrasound and nitric oxide as a treatment modality against bacterial biofilms in chronic wounds, as well as ways to minimise bacterial deposition on medical devices through modifications to the local flow dynamic environment.

Dario has taught across a range of fundamental and applied subjects in the fields of Biomedical and Mechanical Engineering, Drug Delivery Technologies, and Interventional Medicine.
