Alumni Profile: Eduardo Bruno Martins
Eduardo Bruno Martins (DPhil Pathology, 1991) is Chief Medical Officer of Sagimet Biosciences, a biotechnology company in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he leads clinical development of fatty acid synthase (FASN) inhibitors for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). His career in biotechnology spans more than 26 years and a wide range of therapeutic areas, including hepatology, vaccines, allergy and immunology, orphan diseases and oncology. He has worked across the full spectrum of drug development, from translational research through to Phase IV clinical studies.
Before moving into biotech, Eduardo was Associate Professor of Medicine at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and served as Treasurer of the Organisation Mondiale d’Endoscopie Digestive. He completed his DPhil at Oxford in primary sclerosing cholangitis, building on his medical degree from Rio de Janeiro. His time in Oxford, working closely with hepatologists and pathologists at the John Radcliffe, proved formative. It broadened his understanding of how research, clinical practice and institutional structures interact, and introduced him to interdisciplinary exchange through Green College’s academic and social life.
That period shaped his willingness to explore new environments and take on challenges beyond traditional clinical pathways. After returning to Brazil, he became involved in hospital administration, led efforts to integrate clinical and basic science research, and advised healthcare institutions undergoing rapid growth. Early collaborations and insights from Oxford also led to a publication in Gastroenterology that contributed to the growing body of research on diagnostic approaches for cholangiocarcinoma associated with primary sclerosing cholangitis.
Eduardo later moved to the United States to join the biotech sector, progressing from consultant to senior leadership roles and now CMO. He continues to draw on the intellectual curiosity and cross-disciplinary mindset fostered at Green College. Outside work, he is an enthusiastic road cyclist, photographer and wrist-watch builder.
