Bio
I am Professor of Paediatric Metabolic Medicine at the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Childhood (ICH) and an Honorary Consultant at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH).
I trained in medicine at Oxford University and went into Paediatrics immediately after my house officer posts. I trained in a range of paediatric subspecialties in Bristol and in Metabolic Medicine at Great Ormond Street Hospital. I have had a passion for Metabolic Medicine, mitochondrial diseases, and research ever since. My career journey included a Royal Childrenโs Hospital Research Fellowship in Melbourne, Australia, completion of paediatric training in Oxford, a PhD in Molecular Medicine at UCL (ICH) as an MRC Clinical Training Fellow, and completion of clinical training in Metabolic Medicine during an Academic Clinical Lecturer post. I was a DH/HEFCE Best Research for Best Health Senior Clinical Lecturer and subsequently was promoted to Reader and then to full Professor in 2014.
Currently I work in the Genetics and Genomic Medicine Department at ICH, where I run the Mitochondrial Research Group, which I established in 2000. I am clinically active, coordinating the mitochondrial service at GOSH, and my research interests include elucidating the genetic basis and disease mechanisms of mitochondrial diseases, and developing novel pharmacological and genetic therapies for these currently incurable disorders.
My other roles include being Editor in Chief of the Journal of Inherited Metabolic Medicine, a member of the Medical Research Councilโs Clinical Training Panel, Assessment Advisor to the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, Special Advisor to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, Mitochondrial subnetwork lead of the MetabERN European Reference Network, and one of the leads of the ClinGen Primary Mitochondrial Disease gene curations.
