The Astronomy for All Lectures 2022 will feature themes including the transformation of knowledge during the space exploration era and will anticipate significant further discoveries in the coming decade as a result of new facilities and telescopes.
The first lecture, Spacecraft exploration of our solar system, is set to take place on Thursday 12 May and will be given by Professor John Zarnecki, former President of the Royal Astronomical Society, previous Director at the International Space Science Institute in Switzerland and former chair of the European Space Agency’s Space Science Advisory Committee.
As per tradition, Associate Fellow and convenor Charles Barclay will present one of the lectures himself. His talk Illuminating the Dark Ages – the era of James Webb will take place on Thursday 19 May.
The series will conclude on Thursday 26 May with Dr Aprajita Verma delivering her talk A tale of two telescopes: the Vera C. Rubin Observatory and the Extremely Large Telescope. Aprajita is a Senior Researcher at the University of Oxford. She is Project Scientist for the UK Extremely Large Telescope Programme and In-kind Program Coordinator for the Vera C. Rubin Observatory.
The annual lecture series, convened by Charles Barclay, has been running since 2006 and brings talks by notable astronomers and astrophysicists to the home of the historic Radcliffe Observatory. It was set up as a way of strengthening and reinforcing that link.
Charles is Outreach Astronomer, Director of the Blackett Observatory at Marlborough College, and Academic Visitor in the Astrophysics sub-department at the University of Oxford.
