Celebrating 50 years of the Kawasaki Gakuen medical institute

The 50th Anniversary of the foundation of Kawasaki Gakuen was celebrated on 6 June 2020, with a 19-year association with Green Templeton College. Founded by Sukenobu Kawasaki, MD PhD, in 1970 in Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture, Japan, Kawasaki Gakuen was established under the three philosophical themes of Liberal Humanity; Sound Body; Profound Knowledge. Now consisting of five educational institutions and two university hospitals, Kawasaki Gakuen continues to make progress toward the future as an integrated group of educational institutions focused on medical science, medical care and medical welfare.
Green Templeton’s links with Kawasaki Gakuen began with the signing of a “Memorandum of Understanding” in 2002. From this initial connection twenty two faculty members of Kawasaki Medical School and Kawasaki University of Medical Welfare attended on a study abroad program by 2016, and since 2014, an annual joint symposium has been held by faculty members from both countries, deepening exchanges in the fields of medical science, medical care and medical welfare.
Links have been developed with Fellows in a range of fields: History of Medicine (Professor Mark Harrison), Medical Anthropology (Professor Elizabeth Hsu), Sociology (Professor Mary Daly), Education (Emeritus Professor Ingrid Lunt), Statistics (Principal Denise Lievesley). There have also been many opportunities for clinical placements and electives for medical students.
Green Templeton has enjoyed welcoming 8 visits from the current Chairman of board of directors, Seiji Kawasaki MD, PhD, as well as many exchanges of visiting fellows and students between Kawasaki Gakuen and Green Templeton College. Kawasaki Gakuen has also fostered links with the wider University in the Medical Science Division and Medical Ethics.
Building this year’s 50th anniversary and 19 years of connection, Green Templeton College and Kawasaki Gakuen look forward to growing and building on these links further in coming years.
