Dr Charles Roehr’s paper on surfactant replacement therapy for RDS in preterm infants published in Pediatric Research

Dr Charles Roehr, a Research Fellow of Green Templeton CollegeA new paper co-authored by Dr Charles Roehr, a Green Templeton College Research Fellow, has been published in Pediatric Research.

The paper, titled Surfactant replacement therapy for respiratory distress syndrome in preterm infants: United Kingdom national consensus, sought recommendations from UK specialists in neonatal respiratory disease and its management.

It has been highlighted in the Editor’s Focus for the July 2019 print issue.

The aim was to develop consensus recommendations from UK specialists, selected because of their previous clinical and scientific experience of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), on the use of surfactant for the management of RDS in preterm infants.

International consensus guidelines exist but the paper explains recent developments in the field of less invasive surfactant administration have prompted the need for a UK national consensus on the subject.

Seven recommendations were debated and modified in a series of iterative reviews using a three-step modified Delphi method to reach a consensus among the panel, before a face to face meeting to discuss exact wording and hierarchy of the recommendations.
