Danny Dorling to open Social Science Seminar Series

Danny Dorling, Halford MacKinder Professor of Geography

Danny Dorling, the Halford Mackinder Professor of Geography at the University of Oxford, will be the first speaker at the inaugural Green Templeton Social Science Seminar Series, which aims to increase the dialogue between the social sciences disciplines at the college and beyond.

The social sciences represent a diverse spectrum of disciplines ranging through population and demography; public health; anthropology; human geography; criminology; and more. The environment provides a common theme for debate within social sciences, acting as a locus for inter- and transdisciplinary dialogue.

Professor Dorling will launch the initiative on Wednesday, 6 February at 17:30 with a seminar called Inequality and Environment, addressing four main topics of discussion including why richer countries consume and pollute more, and whether there are too many people in the world and, if so, can the planet can cope?

He will also explore whether climate change emissions are spiralling out of control, and how social sciences can help when it comes to inequality and the environment.

The talk is free to attend and open to all students within the University. It will take place at the college’s EP Abraham Lecture Theatre on Woodstock Road (get directions on how to find us). Register for a place now.

Professor Dorling joined the School of Geography and the Environment, University of Oxford, in September 2013 to take up the Halford Mackinder Professorship in Geography. His work concerns issues of housing, health, employment, education, wealth and poverty.

His recent books include, co-authored texts The Atlas of the Real World: Mapping the way we live and Bankrupt Britain: An atlas of social change.
