Discovery in Radcliffe Observatory gardens wins Photography Competition 2023

There were a wide variety of entries for this year’s Photography Competition, aiming to find the most striking image representing our ‘Discover’.

More than 80 photographs were submitted for the judging panel to consider, revealing a glimpse into our college members’ discoveries over the past year.

Thank you to everyone who took part!

Winner

‘Hidden Caterpillar’ by Ryan Caplin (MBA, 2022)

Young child out of focus looking at sharply in focus caterpillar resting between thumb and forefinger

Taken during a quiet Sunday morning ‘nature walk’ through GTC, my children and I took the hidden path to the compost pile. Hanging in front of us in the air, nearly invisible, was this small caterpillar. My daughter, took interest and cared for it as her ‘pet’ for the rest of our exploration on 28 May 2023. The judges chose the photo not only because a child is discovering, but as the framing draws in the viewer to discover with them.

Honorable mentions

‘Discover: Astronomy’ by Adam J. Bush (Graduate Entry Medicine, 2021)

Large high window frame with blue light fading to near darkness with moon framed in one pane and telescope centred at bottom of window

Taken in the Tower of the Radcliffe Observatory on 30 October 2022. The judges remarked on the framing and composition being almost symmetrical, which add to the image, and the unusual aspect as silhouette with the position of the moon.

‘Fog creating mystery: with the torch light pointed at the sky and star, symbolizing the pursuit of the vastness of the stars and the water’ by Zi Huang (DPhil Engineering Science, 2022)

Dark night with tree in spotlight of torch and lots of detail including water and track in foreground

Taken at Port Meadow on 14 February 2023. The judges commented on the composition of fog and water coming together. They liked how the photo plays with texture, the way the paths are gently lit up and how you can keep discovering in this photo if you take the time to look.

‘I see you!’ by Abril Rios Rivera (DPhil Migration Studies, 2021)

Individual driving in car with windscreen wipers clearing rain and open road ahead. Hat on dashboard in front of driver.

Taken in Tapachula, Chiapas, Mexico in December 2022. The judges really liked the detail in the car and the feeling of being with the driver having an experience everyone has had before – anticipating the road ahead.

Theme

The theme was ‘discover’.

The judges hoped to see a range of creative and imaginative interpretations of this theme – that could mean different things to different people. Discover could be to make a breakthrough in research, to learn something new about a person or a place. It could just be something unexpected, or a chance encounter.

The Green Templeton College Photography Competition has been running since 2009, thanks to the generous support of the late neurologist Dr Elman Poole, who held a long interest in photography.
