Diversifying portraiture in college
Green Templeton College has chosen International Women’s Day to announce a new initiative to diversify the college’s portraits.

International Women’s Day is celebrated annually to mark the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It has been taking place for more than a century, with the first International Women’s Day gathering in 1911.
The diversifying portraiture project aims to showcase and celebrate the college’s diverse cohort of alumna, fellows, students and staff in ways that complement the theme for International Women’s Day 2023 of ‘Embrace Equity’.
The activity, spearheaded by the college’s Equality and Diversity Forum will not only celebrate the inspiring women in our community but is also a crucial step in the ongoing process of creating a visual environment that better reflects Green Templeton’s vibrant and diverse community.
Senior Tutor and Equality and Diversity lead Alison Stenton comments ‘Green Templeton is home to many wonderful portraits of exceptional people who have made the college what it is today. We now wish to build on our history by adding new images of inspirational GTC women to our walls. This project allows us to enrich the living and working environment for our community, and to visualize our inclusive values’.
The college plans to run this project which is generously supported by the Annual Fund over the course of a year. The finished portraits are to hang in an exhibition for International Women’s Day 2024, after which they will have permanent homes across the college.
Nominations for the project will open soon and members of the college community are encouraged to nominate inspirational peers, colleagues, fellows and alumna.
It is hoped that this project will intrigue and inspire all those who study, work, and visit the college.
