Members recognised in King’s New Year Honours 2024
Green Templeton congratulates college members on their recognition in the 2024 King’s New Year honours for major contributions across varied fields.
Professor Neil Mortensen
Emeritus Fellow Professor Neil Mortensen has been appointed a Knight Bachelor for services to Surgery. He is Professor of Colorectal Surgery in the University of Oxford Medical School, and a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon. He is immediate past president of the Royal College of Surgeons and was a Governing Body Fellow at Green, then Green Templeton, colleges from 2005 to 2021.
Professor Mortensen said: ‘I am delighted to receive this honour on behalf of the surgical community and the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences. The last three years have been really tough for the delivery of surgical services and surgical research. Colleagues here in Oxford and around the country have shown remarkable leadership, innovation and resilience. Surgeons deserve the recognition implied in this honour and I am grateful to accept it on their behalf.’
Kevin Burke
Alumnus Kevin Burke (MSc Industrial Relations and Human Resource Management, 1990) was awarded an OBE for services to Charity and Philanthropy. He is an Arts Philanthropist and Board Member, BAFTA Hong Kong Advisory Board.
Zamanganga Mbatha
Alumna Zamanganga Mbatha (MSc Teacher Education, 2020), was awarded an MBE for services to Teenagers with Learning Difficulties in the London Borough of Newham. Zama is Head of Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities, Royal Docks Academy. She has over 23 years of experience in education, specialising in teaching teenagers with Special Educational Needs. Through all these years, Zama has dedicated her life serving and advocating for teenagers with profound and complex medical needs to access meaningful education.
Zama said: ‘I feel honoured and deeply humbled to have been chosen amongst all other teacher who equally, if not more dedicate their lives in relentless pursuit of offering high quality education to probably the most vulnerable teenagers in the land. I dedicate this award to all teachers, co-educators and families who make it all possible.’
