Dr Michael Smets recognised on Thinkers50’s Radar List 2019
Green Templeton College’s Governing Body Fellow, Dr Michael Smets, has been named on the Thinkers50 Radar list for 2019.
The annual report from Thinkers50, the global platform for management ideas, celebrates 30 emerging thinkers from around the world with the potential to shape the future of business and make lasting contributions to management theory and practice.
Dr Smets, Associate Professor in Management and Organisation Studies at the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School, was described as an “up and coming voice of leadership.”
Thinkers50 highlighted his work as the lead researcher and author of The CEO Report, a study that collected information from 152 CEOs in different sectors and countries. The CEOs spoke anonymously about their individual experiences and the leadership challenges they face, and the data was used to examine how the role of a CEO is changing in the current business environment and what attributes and skills are now needed to succeed.
Dr Smets’ other research on professional service firms, especially their internationalisation, innovation and regulation, was also recognised. He focuses particularly on the management of global law, consulting and reinsurance firms, using innovative qualitative methods such as video- and team-ethnography.

Thinkers50’s co-founder, Des Dearlove, said of 2019’s Radar list: “This is as powerful a group as we have ever identified in our annual selection.”
He added: “Thinkers50 is all about scanning the world for the very best in management ideas. We believe there is nothing so practical as a great idea, so we are constantly on the lookout for people who not only originate and articulate ideas, but also put them into compelling practice. These thinkers are global, original, and worth watching in the years to come.”
