Peter Jones (1947–2023)

Emeritus Fellow Peter Jones SmilingIt is with sadness that the college learned of the death of Emeritus Fellow Peter Jones.

Peter was a Governing Body Fellow of then-Green College from 1989 to 1999 then an Emeritus Fellow of first Green College, then, since 2008, of Green Templeton College.

Peter was first elected to the fellowship to coincide with his promotion to Deputy Registrar of the University of Oxford on 1 April 1989.

Having studied Classics at Worcester College, Peter served in progressively more senior administrative positions at the University of Lancaster, University of Oxford and University of Warwick before returning to Oxford as Assistant Registrar in 1980.

From 1984, he was Senior Assistant Registrar and Secretary of the Medical School, during which time he was introduced to college by Emeritus Fellow Clive Hahn.

He went on to take on the Acting Registrarship of the University following the retirement of Dr Bill Dorey and until the arrival of David Holmes as Registrar.

Peter is remembered for having a wide circle of friends. This rich social life was generated by the intense gregariousness he shared with his late-twin-brother Paul, and Paul’s late-wife Christine.

Peter’s funeral service took place at North Oxfordshire Crematorium on Wednesday 25 October.

The thoughts of college members are with Peter’s family and friends at this time.
