Radcliffe Observatory illuminated
Green Templeton College illuminated the Radcliffe Observatory Tower on Friday 15 October to coincide with the 2021 Cancer Research UK Shine Night Walk and to raise of awareness of Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). The Shine Night Walk Oxford is a 10k night walk to see the city in a different light and support Cancer Research UK’s efforts to beat cancer
The illuminations included purple in support of Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) Awareness Day. DLD is an invisible disorder of language acquisition that affects approximately two children in every Year 1 class. Being invisible, it is vulnerable to being undiagnosed and can impact on learning, friendships, academic achievement, social and emotional well-being and employment. DLD persists into adulthood but there are currently few accessible services for young people and adults with DLD.
The beautiful eighteenth-century Radcliffe Observatory is the central focus of the three-acre Green Templeton site. Construction began in 1772 and the building functioned as a working observatory from 1773 until 1934. These days the iconic Observatory houses Green Templetonβs Common Room, dining hall and kitchens.
