Green Templeton flies the Oxford Suffrage flag at college
Green Templeton College flew the Oxford Women’s Suffrage Society banner to mark 100 years since British and Irish women first voted in a general election and stood as parliamentary candidates.
A reproduction of a banner made and displayed by the OWSS from 1908 was placed on the front gate of the college on Friday 14 December.
The Representation of the People Act 1918 gave votes to women over 30 for the first time, and on 14 December 1918 they were able to vote in a general election for the first time.
Multiple colleges and departments at the University of Oxford, and local schools, took part in the commemoration, coordinated as part of a programme led by Women in the Humanities to mark the centenary of women’s suffrage.
A larger version of the banner, commissioned by Women in the Humanities and the Bodleian Library, is currently on display at the Sappho to Suffrage: Women Who Dared exhibition at the Weston Library.
