Summer Eights 2024
Green Templeton Boat Club is participating in its 14th Summer Eights races from Wednesday 22 May to Saturday 25 May with a strong line-up of five boats. After a challenging rowing year that saw the novices regatta of Michaelmas term as well as the Torpids bump race of Hilary term cancelled due to river conditions, college crews are eager to give their best in the most exciting event of the college rowing year: the Summer Eights bumps races.
In these races, the college crews compete in divisions where thirteen boats line up at the downstream end of the river Isis. After a firing of a cannon indicates the start of the race, the crews race to ‘bump’ i.e., reach the boat in front of them while avoiding being bumped by the boat chasing them. Once a bump is reached, the bumping and bumped boats move to the side to allow the rest of the race progress.
Summer Eights is competed over four days, where the starting order of the divisions changes based on the bump results of the previous day. The ultimate goal is to ‘win blades’, which are either awarded to the winning crews in the men’s and women’s races or to crews competing in lower divisions that managed to bump during each of the four race days. The crews winning blades are entitled to commission trophy oars painted in the college colours and detailed with the crew names – you may spot them on the boathouse walls or on the office walls of former rowers around Oxford or even around the world!
See the crew line-ups of the three men’s and two women’s boats that are competing for GTBC this year. Below we will be updating the day-by-day race times and results. College members are encouraged to support the crews from Longbridges Boathouse.
