One-to-One Tuition
What do you need help with? All on-course Green Templeton students can contact the tutors below by email at any time to set up an appointment.

Quantitative research design
If you’re beginning a project which requires the collection and analysis of quantitative data, but don’t have a lot of training or experience in quantitative research design, then Associate Fellow Dr Coral Milburn-Curtis (coral.milburn-curtis@gtc.ox.ac.uk) will help and support you with one-to-one tuition. Coral is an experienced teacher with a DPhil in Education, and has been advising Green Templeton students for several years. She can advise you on:
- Research Design
- Variables and Hypotheses
- Sampling Methodology
- Data Collection Methods
- Instrumentation
- Data Analysis Techniques
In particular, if you are planning to design and analyse survey data, then she can advise you through the whole process.
Coral is amazing. She was very patient and helped me clarify my survey questions, and she did not judge me for being confused about quantitative analysis. I am grateful to the college for making this opportunity available.
Academic English
If English isn’t your first language and you’d like some personalized one-to-one tuition to support your use of the language for academic purposes, Andrew Mitchell is now available for free online appointments. Andrew is a qualified Academic English teacher with twenty years’ experience of working with students from several British Universities, including Oxford.
These free sessions are open to currently enrolled Green Templeton students only, with a maximum of one hour-long session plus one optional hour-long follow-up session per student per term. If you’d like to make an appointment with Andrew, email him (andrewbmitchell@hotmail.com) and let him know what you’d like to work on. He’ll reply to set up an online meeting at a time that suits you both. This could be in termtime or vacation.
Andrew cannot read or provide feedback on whole essays, presentations or other pieces which you intend to submit for assessment in your course. However, he can:
- Read a representative section of an essay, such as the introduction (up to one page) and provide suggestions based on that
- Read a longer section, essay or presentation (up to four pages) that you’ve already submitted, or will not submit for assessment
- Help you with strategies and exercises for specific skills or aspects of spoken or written Academic English that you want to develop.

Establishing good writing habits
Academic writing – whether a MSc essay, a DPhil thesis, an article for publication or even a funding proposal or job application – is key to academic success, but it can be challenging, and AI tools can make things worse! If you’re battling writers’s block, or just not sure of the difference between redrafting, copy editing and proof reading, Dr Ruth Scobie (ruth.scobie@gtc.ox.ac.uk) can help. A former Oxford lecturer and college tutor in literature, Ruth has written two books published by academic presses, and co-edited another.
She can’t read, edit or proof-read a full draft of any essay or text you intend to submit for assessment, but she’ll read sample sentences or paragraphs, suggest editing tactics, and/or work with you to formulate a writing plan.

Applying for research fellowship funding
If you’re thinking of applying for further funding after your studies at Green Templeton, but aren’t sure where to start, Professor James Sheppard can help you with an hour of one-to-one support. James is a Green Templeton Research Fellow and Professor of Applied Health Data Science based in the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences. He has secured post-doctoral research fellowships in the field of Medical Sciences from the Medical Research Council, Wellcome Trust and National Institute for Health and Care Research. He can talk you through planning a fellowship application and share his experience on what to do, and what not to do, when approaching these applications for the first time. Email James (james.sheppard@phc.ox.ac.uk) to set up an online or in-person meeting at a time that suits you both.

Job presentations
If you’re preparing to give a research presentation as part of an interview for a Research Fellowship or related academic post, and would like feedback from a highly experienced British senior academic, email Professor Alan Silman (alan.silman@gtc.ox.ac.uk) to set up an informal rehearsal.
