Professor David Matthews

Professor David Matthews is a Radcliffe Common Room Member at Green Templeton College, University of Oxford.

Professor Matthews was delighted to be elected as the first Joan and Richard Doll Senior Fellow at Green Templeton College, which was the springboard for his move to be clinical director of Diabetes and Endocrinology at the old Radcliffe Infirmary. He is past President of the European Association of the Study of Diabetes (EASD), and holds the Albert Renold medal. He was Director of Medical Studies at Harris Manchester College (1996 to 2008), where he was also Dean and Vice President. He instituted and directed the Robert Turner Post-graduate course (residential) at Oxford until 2019.

His research covers many aspect of the ways in which insulin is secreted and why Type 2 diabetes occurs and is treated.

He raised the funding for, and oversaw the building of the Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism (OCDEM), of which he was the first Chairman (1999-2013). Over the course of his career he has authored more than 350 peer-reviewed publications (citations: >100,000; H index: 99).

He is currently Chair of the Oxford Hospitals Charity.
