Professor Janey Messina

Professor Janey Messina is a Fellow of Green Templeton College and Professor of Global Health Geography, University of Oxford.

Professor Messina’s academic interests lie at the intersection of geography, epidemiology, and public health, with a particular focus on understanding the spatial dynamics of infectious diseases. After completing a Ph.D. in Geography at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, she became a senior postdoctoral researcher with the Spatial Ecology and Epidemiology Group in the Zoology (now Biology) department at the University of Oxford in 2012. In 2016 she took on her current role.

Janey’s research centres around the spatial aspects of infectious (and primarily vector-borne) disease spread, and with teaching focussed on health and medical geography, quantitative methods, and geographic data science. She is committed to addressing health challenges through interdisciplinary collaboration, practically seeking to unravel the complex interactions between human populations, environmental factors, and disease transmission by employing statistical modelling techniques and geographic information systems (GIS) to map and analyse patterns of disease spread. The ultimate aim of Janey’s research is to inform effective strategies for disease control and prevention at a variety of scales.
