Teaching Associate in Psychiatry

Green Templeton College seeks to appoint a Teaching Associate (TA) in Psychiatry to support undergraduate medical education. This is a part-time, fixed-term, unpaid appointment aimed at psychiatry trainees who are committed to high-quality medical student teaching and supervision.

The Psychiatry TA will provide regular small-group teaching to 5th Year medical students during their Psychiatry rotation and contribute to revision sessions for both 5th and Final Year students.

Key responsibilities

  • Deliver regular small-group teaching sessions (approx. 1 hour every 2 weeks during term time). The majority of these sessions will be held online, with occasional in person sessions at Green Templeton.
  • Teach across the undergraduate psychiatry curriculum as defined in the Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA), including:
      • General adult psychiatry
      • Old age psychiatry
      • Child and adolescent psychiatry
  • Ensure coverage of core presentations and conditions such as psychosis, depression, anxiety disorders, self-harm, substance misuse, eating disorders, dementia, capacity/consent, and mental health in pregnancy.
  • Contribute to 5th Year psychiatry revision sessions (Applied Knowledge Test (AKT) and multi-station clinical revision).
  • Contribute to Final Year AKT psychiatry revision teaching.
  • Provide formative feedback to students and support their preparation for clinical examinations.
  • Communicate promptly with students regarding teaching arrangements and adapt sessions to student needs.
  • Collaborate with other Teaching Associates and the Director of Clinical Studies to maintain high-quality psychiatry teaching provision.

Person Specification

Essential

  • GMC registration with licence to practise.
  • Practising in the UK for the duration of the appointment.
  • Clinical competence: At least CT1-level psychiatry trainee (or equivalent), with up-to-date knowledge of psychiatry across general, old age and child/adolescent specialties.
  • Teaching ability: Evidence of interest and engagement in medical education.
  • Professional skills:
    • Fitness to practise.
    • Ability to build rapport with students and facilitate a supportive learning environment.
    • Organisational skills, reliability and ability to deliver regular teaching.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues.
  • Location: Based within Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust or the Thames Valley Deanery to enable in-person teaching.

Desirable

  • Previous experience of small-group or bedside teaching for medical students.
  • Evidence of excellent student feedback from prior teaching.
  • Formal teaching qualification or attendance at medical education courses.
  • Experience in designing or delivering structured teaching programmes.
  • Experience in giving effective feedback.
  • Evidence of leadership, research, or quality improvement experience, with potential to involve medical students.
