Becoming a Caterpillar (2021. Directed by Paola Esposito). Subtitled ‘A multimodal perspective on butoh dance’, this video article examines the practice of metamorphosis in the Japanese dance movement approach of butoh, focusing on techniques for ‘becoming a caterpillar’ (aka, ‘becoming a wave’). The video adopts a sensory anthropology perspective which attends to the micro-phenomenological dimensions of the practice, exploring them multimodally through a combination of textual, graphic, dance, and performance re-enactments.
