About

The GTC Medical Anthropology Film and Discussion Group explores the extent to which film can complement, enrich and further the study of medical anthropology themes, topics and methods. After watching selected clips, we discuss a film’s content and approach, and interrogate its capacity to support the analysis of issues relating to illness, crisis, health and wellbeing. This term we focus on the theme of ‘health inequalities’.

How I Live (2020. Directed by Meghan Shea). ‘How I Live’ follows the journeys of four children with cancer in Guatemala, El Salvador, Myanmar, Egypt and Ghana. Following them from diagnosis through treatment, the complex issues facing patients, families and healthcare providers emerge. The film documents the difficulties of accessing cancer treatment in low resource settings while providing examples of how global collaboration can lead to increased survival rates and closing global health inequities
