Confronting cancer among Africa’s rural poor through implementation research
Examples and lessons from Rwanda and Botswana
Thursday 21 November 2019 16:30 to 17:30Speakers: |
Dr Neo Tapela, Senior Research Fellow, Nuffield Department of Population Health and Equality and Diversity Fellow, Green Templeton College, University of Oxford |
Location: |
Barclay Room, Green Templeton College |
Cancer-related mortality is rising and disproportionately affects low- and middle-income countries, including in Sub-Saharan Africa. During her talk Dr Tapela will: a) provide an overview of trends in cancer burden in the African region and contributors to poor survival, b) describe implementation research examples from her work addressing some of these contributors. Specifically, she will present the approach to establishing the Butaro cancer center of excellence in rural Rwanda to expand access to treatment, and the development of the Potlako intervention in rural Botswana to improve early diagnosis. Lessons relevant to research in resource-limited settings, as well as future directions with potential for collaboration will be shared.
Dr Tapela is a Senior Research Fellow in the Nuffield Department of Population Health’s Translational Epidemiology Unit, a Research Associate at Botswana Harvard Partnership and Equality and Diversity Fellow at Green Templeton. Her research interests focus on reducing premature mortality in resource-limited sub-Saharan Africa through enhancing understanding of risk factors for chronic non-communicable diseases (particularly cardiovascular disease and cancer), and developing scalable innovative healthcare service delivery interventions that address outcome disparities for these conditions. She has served as Principal Investigator for multiple National Institutes of Health-funded projects, including a district-wide cancer early diagnosis initiative in rural Botswana, and a research collaborative to assess needs and build non-communicable disease research capacity in Southern Africa.
