Designing and operating an effective White House are critical to the success of any presidency – and to democracy in the United States. Former White House Deputy Chief of Staff Chris Liddell will lay out concrete nonpartisan steps and recommendations to significantly improve how the White House functions in discussion with Mitali Mukherjee.

This event is open to alumni as part of Meeting Minds 2024.

About the participants

Chris Liddell off centre headshot in black and whitein SquareChris Liddell is a Visiting Research Fellow at Green Templeton College, University of Oxford. Chris has had careers in the private, public, and philanthropic sectors. In the private sector, Chris has been Chief Financial Officer of several companies, including Microsoft, International Paper and General Motors (where he was Vice Chairman). In the public sector, Chris has been Deputy Chief of Staff at the White House, the Director of the American Technology Council focused on technology issues, and the Director of Strategic Initiatives focused primarily on modernising Government technology. He is author of Year Zero: the Five-Year Presidency. In the philanthropic sector, Chris was the founding Chairman of New Zealand’s largest foundation focused on the environment and education.

Mitali Mukherjee headshotMitali Mukherjee (moderator) is an Associate Fellow, Green Templeton College and Director of Journalist Programmes, Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, University of Oxford. Mitali is a political economy journalist with more than two decades of experience in TV, print and digital journalism. Over the course of her journalistic career, Mitali has been Consulting Business Editor at The Wire and Mint. Prior to that she was Markets Editor at CNBC TV 18 and Prime Time Anchor at TV Today and Doordarshan.
