Alumnus success with educational card game for clinicians
Green Templeton takes pride in the diverse and impactful paths alumni tread after finishing their journey as students. The college is also proud to foster interdisciplinary thinking and a distinct orientation towards practical solutions. One embodiment of this approach is alumnus Dr Sven Jungmann (Master of Public Policy, 2013), whose work continues to influence the medical community.
Sven is a doctor-turned-tech-entrepreneur who develops a device to detect diseases over the breath. On the side, he’s a frequent keynote speaker on healthcare innovation and enjoys writing about technology and entrepreneurship in healthcare. But aside from his fascination for sophisticated technologies, he also enjoys using ‘simple’ solutions to drive meaningful change—it doesn’t always have to be digital.
In collaboration with fellow Oxford graduates, Dr Johanna Ludwig and Dr Ryan Purdy, he created a unique educational card game called ‘Asystole’. This game, packed with a sense of humour that caters specifically to doctors (for example, an electrocardiogram, ECG, timer replaces the common hourglass), is designed for those with clinical training. In line with other work emanating from college, the game combines a commitment to learning with a focus on practice as it aims to improve communication skills and create more shared and enjoyable learning experiences. Since its launch, ‘Asystole’ has successfully established a strong presence in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, selling over 2,000 units annually. It’s earned recognition as ‘Amazon’s Choice’ and maintains a 5-star rating.
Sven Jungmann, alongside, again, Johanna Ludwig and Ryan Purdy, has also co-authored Beyond the Bedside. This book, paired with its accompanying reflective writing journal, guides medical professionals pondering a shift away from clinical careers. With a focus on introspection and constructive action, it encourages readers to explore their deepest aspirations, fears, and potentials. Sven says that the seeds for this work were planted back when he was a student in the Management and Medicine programme at GTC, prompting him to think comprehensively about what having a truly impactful career in medicine means.
Both ‘Asystole’ and Beyond the Bedside reflect the ethos of Green Templeton College – combining practicality with a forward-thinking attitude, all while addressing significant contemporary issues. These projects showcase how our alumni carry the spirit of the college with them, applying their interdisciplinary training to make a meaningful impact in the world. It reaffirms the potency of our mission: to cultivate a community that pushes boundaries, solves real-world problems, and continues to learn and grow.
