Congratulations Yumna Ahmad
Yumna Ahmad (Clinical Medicine, 2023) won a Vice-Chancellor’s Award for a project on healthcare in Gaza.
Yumna, as part of OxCRED (Oxford Crisis Education), was announced as winner in the Making a Difference Globally category for delivering Oxford-designed online education to university students in crisis-affected areas of the world. Yumna did a phenomenal amount of work designing and leading the project which, during its pilot year, focused on addressing urgent healthcare education needs in Gaza.
Reflecting on her role, Yumna said,
‘Creating OxCRED has been a true blessing. It is an honour to have the trust of our colleagues in Gaza to deliver resources, ensuring we uphold their high standards for medical training.
‘However, in Oxford it is very easy to forget how privileged we are. We have the world’s best resources at our fingertips, the best lecturers in each of their respective fields delivering the teaching and all of the supplementary material we could need. All of these things are things we take for granted. Our colleagues in Gaza deserve the same right to their education, the same right to chase their ambition with the same ease we have.
‘OXCRED is an atom in the sea of everything that needs to be done to support medical education in Gaza, and by God’s grace I am grateful we have the chance to be a part of the community working towards this. We must keep going forward and keep pushing to support and empower our colleagues, as the journey to rebuilding medical education in Gaza continues.’

The project builds on Yumna’s work as president of OxPal. OxPal connects doctors and medical students in the UK with their counterparts in the West Bank and Gaza to deliver online, real-time, teaching. It delivers a range of teaching opportunities via online educational platforms that utilise the wide network of clinicians and tutors in and beyond Oxford, in order to complement local medical teaching and deliver a range of opportunities to Palestinian medical students. OxPal’s work has long-standing support from a range of college members.
