First students achieve Management in Medicine accreditation
This autumn the first cohort of students have achieved Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management (FMLM) accreditation since the Green Templeton Management in Medicine Programme gained that status in 2020.
The eleven successful students attended a selection of seminars and workshops across a series of behaviours (self, team, corporate, systems), wrote short reflective pieces for each event attended, and wrote a final reflective piece on the overall impact and future plans. This informs the practice what they have learned from the programme, how they might apply the learning and what further actions they may take.
Most attendees are expected to be able to cover the content over two years and so there are expanding cohorts of students expected to gain accreditation in 2022. As an enrichment programme, attendance at all sessions is not required to achieve certification.
Helene-Mari van der Westhuizen (DPhil Public Health and Infectious Diseases, 2018) and medical doctor who hopes to work as a medical manager in future said, ‘By being exposed to this course I got the glimpse of the wealth of experience that many of our lecturers had – insights that come with years of working in the field.’
Shanghavie Loganathan (Medicine, 2016) said ‘the programme takes a broad view from across the world and highlights where we can learn from other health systems.’
Helen Stark (DPhil Surgical Sciences, 2020) said ‘I feel I have a much better understanding of how the NHS is structured and funded. I think the regular reflection as part of this course has helped me to understand myself and how I work in relation to others. I have also gained lots of useful frameworks to use, for example in managing conflict, in making better decisions.’
The Management in Medicine Programme develops management and leadership skills for health and care systems in early career professionals. It is open to medical students, doctors in training, postgraduate students and others with an interest in healthcare management.
