Speakers confirmed for 2019 Astronomy for All Lectures
The programme and speakers for Green Templeton’s 2019 Astronomy for All Lectures have been confirmed.
The annual lecture series, convened by Green Templeton Associate Fellow Charles Barclay, has been running since 2006, and consists of three separate talks by notable astronomers and astrophysicists.
As per tradition, Charles will present one of the lectures himself and this year his subject is Reaching young stars – British Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad.
Charles will open the three-part lecture series with his talk on Wednesday 23 January, where he will discuss his experience and the importance of raising aspiration in science education among secondary school students, drawing on his work with the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA).
He has led successful young British teams at the IOAA for three out of the past four years and will detail the development of this new venture and how to ensure the best students from across the country are selected for future competitions, regardless of their background or location.
In November, Charles’ team of five 17-year-old students won two silver medals and received two honourable mentions at the 12th IOAA in Beijing.
The second lecture, called The gravitational sky, will be given by Professor Mike Cruise, who is the President of the Royal Astronomical Society. Professor Cruise will discuss the continued exploration of the gravitational sky, including how gravitational waves predicted by Einstein were finally detected in 2015, and the possibility of detecting the echoing remnants of the Big Bang itself.
The third and final lecture in the series will be given by Dr Becky Smethurst on the subject of Galaxy zoo: galaxies in the living room. Dr Smethurst will discuss the ground-breaking results that have come from the online astrophysics project, Galaxy Zoo, that invites members of the public to help identify a million galaxies.
