New volunteering partnership
All college members are welcome to join, and there’s plenty of opportunities available, so if you’re interested you’re bound to find something that fits around your availability!
The initiative is spearheaded by Daniele Cotton (DPhil Musculoskeletal Sciences, 2021) and is being supported by college thanks to the generosity of Annual Fund donors.
A wide range of roles are available in GTC Play Team, read the information below to find out more the roles available! Start dates are flexible, can be worked around other commitments, and training is provided.
Play Volunteer (Regular Volunteering)
Are you looking for regular volunteering with young people at the hospice? This is an opportunity to get involved in the social and play groups for patients and their siblings at Helen & Douglas House. It provides an independent space for fun and shared experiences and promotes social and life skills. Play Volunteers help run the sessions and build supportive relationships with patients and their siblings. Time commitment: 10:00 to 16:00, once monthly OR once every two months.
Play Volunteer Activity Leader (Lead a Single Session)
Got a fun skill you can share? We’re looking for college members to lead a workshop at one of the Social/Play Group Sessions. This could be painting, sculpture, music, photography, arts and craft, magic, juggling, acting, gardening, or anything else! Time commitment: one Saturday session from 10:00 to 16:00.
Events Volunteer (Flexible Volunteering)
Love working with people? You’d make a great Community and Events Volunteer. These volunteers attend and support the charity at a variety of local events, such as fun runs, remembrance events and more! Time commitment: Flexible around availability, shifts are 3 to 6 hours in length.
Community Fundraising Ambassador (Flexible Volunteering)
Great communication skills? This might be the role for you! Fundraising Ambassadors do several things, depending on what appeals! This can include giving presentations about Helen & Douglas House, running engagement activities in the community, or simply sharing Helen & Douglas House update posts on your social media channels. Time commitment: Flexible around your availability, ideally engaging four times per year.
Musicians (Flexible Volunteering)
Play an instrument? We’re looking for musicians to play at remembrance services for families, thank you events for hospice supporters, fundraising events and more! You’ll get the opportunity to play at beautiful venues with other talented musician volunteers. Time commitment: Flexible around your availability
Daniele described the initiative by saying: ‘Helen & Douglas House is the local children’s hospice in Oxford, and the oldest children’s hospice in the world. It needs volunteers like us to help keep the hospice’s amazing work going.’
