Green Templeton Photography Competition
Given the ongoing adjustments to our lives, this year we are enabling people to continue to take part in the Green Templeton photography competition wherever they are, and however they are managing under the lockdown measures. The deadline for entries has also now been extended to Sunday 14 June.
Please send in your snaps for a chance to win £150!
Theme
- This year’s theme is selfie-isolation.
- This year’s competition aims to find the most striking original photograph or photographs that tells a story of adapting and making the most of the global response to the coronavirus pandemic. Entrants can submit up to three photographs as separate entries, or three photos as a triptych (a set of three images connected and intended to be appreciated together).
- Photographs submitted can be from during this current period of social distancing and isolation, or from the rest of the preceding academic year. Selfies, landscapes, portraits etc are all welcome; we just want to see creative captures from our Green Templeton community wherever they are!
Eligibility
- The competition is open to all current members of Green Templeton College (students, Fellows, Common Room Members, staff and alumni).
- Photographs must have been taken during this academic year.
How to enter
- Individuals may submit up to three original photographs (with no filters applied) together with brief details of when and where they were taken.
- All entries must be the original work of the entrant and must not infringe the rights of any other party.
- Entries should be sent to communications@gtc.ox.ac.uk by the extended deadline of Sunday 14 June 2020.
Judging
- The judging panel will consist of Green Templeton Artist-in-Residence Weimin He, Research Fellow Dr Charles Roehr, GCR member Davide Bilardi and digital communications officer Georgia Melodie Hole.
- The judges will select the winning ‘Judges’ Choice’ photograph(s) which, in their opinion, best illustrates the theme of the competition. They will consider a range of factors including composition, technical ability, originality, and relevance to the theme.
- There will also be an ‘audience favourite’ chosen by Green Templeton members by voting online in June. Further details to follow.
Prize
- The winner will be announced on Monday 13 July 2020. The competition judge’s favourite and audience favourite will each receive a cash prize of £150 and have their entry displayed and shared in official college publications.
Consent and Reproduction
- Responsibility for ensuring consent of subjects of the picture lie with the photographer.
- By submitting photos, individuals agree to Green Templeton reproducing them, including across college publications, the website, and social media pages without a fee. A credit will be given wherever possible.

Hear from previous winners:
The Green Templeton College Photography Competition began in 2009 to showcase the creative talents of the college’s members. It is made possible by the generous support of Dr Elman Poole, a retired neurologist living in Oxford, who has long had an interest in photography.

“I live in Observer’s House and what I particularly treasure with regards to studying at Oxford is the beautiful view I have when looking out of the window of my room. For me, the photo which shows my friend and Green Templeton College student in a student room in Observer’s House captures the idea of living on the Green Templeton campus – life is strongly characterised by studying but when doing so, there are always the short moments in between in which you can lift your eyes away from your reading list books and take a look at the beautiful Radcliffe Observatory.”
2015/16
Theme: Green Templeton Looking Out
Winner: Bhagya Sivaraman

Bhagya said:
“I took this photograph in December 2015, standing near the designated smoking area close to the Mathematical Institute, opposite the Observatory. The reflection inside the watery eye on a cold, cold sunny morning exposes the elegance and royalty of the Observatory, conveying Green Templeton College ‘looking out’.”
2014/15
Theme: The Changing Face of Green Templeton College
Winner: Faraz Shibli

Faraz said:
“I was working late in the library one night when the first snow of winter started to fall. I rushed outside with my South African friend, Roné, who had never before seen snow, and watched the blossom tree catching snowflakes in the McAlpine Quad. Not only did it represent the Changing Face of Green Templeton College in terms of the changing of the seasons, but also the transformation of a less often photographed part of the college’s lovely grounds.”
