Summer Eights 2026

Green Templeton Boat Club took part in its 16th Summer Eights races from Wednesday 27 May to Saturday 30 May with a strong line-up of five boats.
In these races, college crews compete in divisions where thirteen boats line up at the downstream end of the River Isis. After the firing of a cannon signals the start of the race, crews aim to ‘bump’ — that is, catch the boat in front while avoiding being bumped by the boat behind them. Once a bump is achieved, both boats move to the side to allow the rest of the race to continue.
Summer Eights takes place over four days, with the starting order of each division changing according to the previous day’s results. The ultimate goal is to ‘win blades’, awarded either to the winning crews in the men’s and women’s races or to crews in lower divisions that successfully bump on each of the four race days. Crews that win blades are entitled to commission trophy oars painted in the college colours and detailed with the crew names. You may spot them on the boathouse walls or in the offices of former rowers around Oxford and beyond.
