Tara Mayhew
DPhil Translational Health Sciences, 2025, Rosamund Snow Scholarship
Tara’s first degree was in History of Art. She then worked in documentary production for several years before taking a career break to raise her family, maintaining her interest in the arts through charity work. One of her children developed Type 1 diabetes in early adolescence, which gave her a deeper understanding of the complexities of living with a chronic illness.
This awareness led her to pursue a master’s degree in Medical Anthropology at UCL, driven by a desire to better understand the relationship between health and society, and to apply the lens of medical anthropology to the complexities she had observed in the care of Type 1 diabetes and in her own family’s experience.
Her DPhil research explores young people’s experiences of managing Type 1 diabetes at school, examining its impact on their physical and mental health, and ways to improve understanding and support in educational settings.
