Professor Aileen Clarke

Professor Aileen Clarke is an Associate Fellow at Green Templeton College, University of Oxford. She is Emeritus Professor of Public Health & Health Services Research at the University of Warwick.

Aileen originally trained as a GP before moving into Public Health and academia. At Warwick she set up a team of 40 researchers including Warwick Evidence – a technology assessment team – which produces appraisals of new drugs, devices and interventions for NICE (The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) and other policymakers. Until recently she was Chair of the Faculty of Medicine at Warwick and was an academic member of the University of Warwick Senate and Council. She was President of the Society for Social Medicine & Population Health until 2018. Aileen joined the board of the Picker Institute in 2018 and served as its Chair from September 2019 to November 2022.

Aileen has been a member of Green Templeton since 2017 and an active contributor to the Management in Medicine Programme. She joined the college’s Sheila Kitzinger Programme in 2019 and in 2022 took over as chair of the programme, which honours the life and builds on the work of the social anthropologist Sheila Kitzinger (1929-2015). Sheila’s work covered a broad range of issues touching the human rights of prisoners, refugees and others and the programme works to undertake activities to highlight issues faced by those marginalised by society.

Aileen has been involved in running, commissioning and editing a large number of different research projects in health and health services over a 30-year career span. She is highly experienced in research and practice in population health. She has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers and is passionate about research on person centred health care and on evidence uptake and knowledge synthesis.
