Dr Amedeo Minichino

Amedeo Minichino Profile PicDr Amedeo Minichino is a Research Fellow at Green Templeton College, University of Oxford.

I am a consultant psychiatrist and a Wellcome Trust Early Career Fellow in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Oxford. My research focuses on how the gut microbiome influences the effectiveness and tolerability of psychotropic medications. I take an interdisciplinary approach, combining clinical studies, in vitro experiments, and animal models, and I collaborate widely across psychiatry, neuroscience, immunology, gastroenterology, and data science.

Clinically, I lead OPEN—the Oxford Preventive and Early interventioN service—an NHS service dedicated to identifying and supporting young people at risk of developing severe mental illnesses, including psychosis, depression, and bipolar disorder. My work in preventive psychiatry extends to developing digital tools and AI-driven screening methods to improve early detection.

I trained in medicine and psychiatry at Sapienza University of Rome before moving to Oxford for my DPhil at St John’s College, supported by MRC funding. Since then, I have been actively involved in teaching, mentoring, and student welfare initiatives, as well as serving on the Medical Sciences Division Ethics Committee and the University’s LGBT+ Advisory Group.

I am very happy to be part of the Green Templeton College community, and I look forward to connecting with fellow members and students. Beyond research and clinical work, my main interests are literature, cinema—especially Italian neorealism—and padel tennis.
