Dr Andrew Lo (The Oxford Senior Executive Finance Programme, 1998) and MSc Management Research, 2001) is Executive Director at UBS Hong Kong branch. He gave us his reflections in summer 2021:

Andrew Lo portrait photoWhy did you choose Green Templeton for your place of study?

I chose Green Templeton College for my MSc in Management Research study without hesitation as I had previously taken the Senior Executive Finance programme at Green Templeton College which sparked my interest in finance. The college was a great place to meet other students studying at the Saïd Business School and cultivated a special fellowship among us. The MSc degree turned out to be transformational as my career pivoted from engineering to finance.

Can you give an overview of your current role?

As Executive Director at UBS Hong Kong branch I advise high net worth individuals and family offices on investing and wealth management. I have a specialist interest in hedge fund and private market investing and hold the CAIA charter in alternative investment. In addition, I am a member of the workgroup on Sustainable Finance in UBS.

I have remained active with Oxford University in a number of roles. As a member of the Oxford China Advisory Group, I give advice to the university on alumni and development matters. As a committee member of the China Oxford Scholarship Fund, I help with candidate selection, fundraising and investment management. I was also a President of the local alumni association – the Oxford and Cambridge Society of Hong Kong.

What are your interests beyond work?

My hobbies are Masters swimming, tennis and wine tasting.

What would you consider your greatest achievement in life so far?

Completing my doctoral degree part time at the University of Manchester as a father working full time in banking and finance.

What began as routine landscaping work on the front lawn has taken a rather unexpected turn…

Earlier this week, contractors uncovered what appear to be dinosaur bones.

Initial (very enthusiastic) assessments suggest the remains could belong to a previously unknown species, tentatively named Green Templetonosaurus.

We’ll share further updates as soon as we know more… 🦖
When the researcher becomes the patient.

In this thought-provoking reflection for The Times Magazine, Research Fellow Karl Smith Byrne shares what tackling cancer has taught him both in his work and in his own life.

Diagnosed with rectal cancer at just 27, Karl brings a rare dual perspective to his field, combining research with lived experience to advocate for greater focus on prevention and more patient-centred science.

A compelling insight into resilience and the future of cancer research.
