Relief of a Writing Up Bursary

Giving to support the student experience is making a real difference across the Green Templeton community in a multitude of ways.

In the latest of a series of impact stories, Aboabea Gertrude Akuffo (DPhil Sociology, 2018) reflects on how she has benefitted from a recent Writing Up Bursary from college.

Aboabea Gertrude Akuffo writes

The thesis writing process is meandering, a roller-coaster process that is challenging both emotionally and intellectually. An added anxiety about money can make it even more challenging. I cannot describe the relief and deep gratitude I felt on September 5, 2022, when I received the email alert at 03:57 pm that the college has decided to provide financial support towards my final terms of writing up. Receiving this funding meant I did not have to feel anxious about money. It kept me going especially during the times when I just could not see the end in sight. This funding is an important part of my final DPhil journey because it puts me in a much healthier state of mind to write up successfully.

I am grateful to GTC for awarding me with the Green Templeton Writing Up Bursary funding for the final terms of my writing up. I am heartily thankful to the generous donors especially Professor Catherine Peters and Dr Christian Visdomini whose contributions to the Principal’s Fund is vital in helping me and others in my situation. I also thank my supervisor Professor Heather Hamill for supporting the application I submitted for this funding.

I am eternally grateful to every donor involved in supporting the Writing up Bursary scheme. Considering this kind gesture and generosity, I am minded to also work hard to give back to society. I thank you for everything.
